I really appreciate how this author writes humans and human responses.
i absolutely flew through this book.
and i really liked the bluntness of it.

my main critizism is the limitations and faults in the worldbuilding.

*makes a strangled sound*

1.)
The depth of world-building and unending, but never boring explanation of the hard-magic / science system in place for this novel is astounding. It never manages to fall into the trap of info-dumping on the reader, staying crisp and detailed but not overbearing as we move through the story.
It drip feeds what information is necessary at the time it’s needed, fleshing out our understanding of Bright Haven; the clans, the politics, the religion and the biases as we encounter them.

2.)
The characters themselves are intrinsically human; chaotic and difficult, at times so detestably hard to like, shining a light on our own privileges and pitfalls. Each person we encounter gives us a window into societal oppression, and how it manifests.

Sciona, The morally ambiguous FMC is at odds with the most commonly seen female heroines of fantasy: She’s ego driven and inscrutable, logical to the point of delusion. A cold hearted scientist with limited social skills, navigating the most difficult social situations the writer can think up whilst pressing her will against an empire that would squash her like a bug.
3.)
This is an intricate critique of power-structures that holds up a mirror to our own world and the hypocrisy and fallacy’s within our own (present/ and) history. It is not so heavy handed that the points made feel didactic, nor is it so subtle as to lack substance.

Wang injects irony, levity, and moments of softness with a grace that buffs up against the brutality and the grotesque examples of sexism, racism and religious zealotry that make this a more advanced and darker read than other books coming out at the same time.

4.)
Read this book if you want a dark academic fantasy that challenges and provokes with wit, wonder, a touch of body horror and a healthy heaping of emotional sabotage.

5.)
In short, a masterpiece of contemporary fiction.

Massive disappointment.
Beyond everything, I found it boring.
It started super stong and the magic system y original and interesting.
However, explanations and conversations become repetitive and redundant after the first couple of chapters, and the resolution to the plot is pretty easy to guess.
I appreciated the violence against sexist religious fanatics tho.

For me, this was one of those books that gets under your skin in both the best and worst way possible. I did NOT see that plot twist coming and sat on the edge of my seat to see how Sciona would deal with it. Seeing a FMC having real flaws with real consequences was incredibly refreshing. I can't think of many other books which blend themes like power, religion, classism, racism and misogyny so seamlessly into one cohesive narrative that is still a pretty dang good story.
There was only one point in the book where the conversation between the main characters dragged on for a bit too long.
The falling in love bit could have been left out but I didn't find it distracting as, in the end, it was only a bit of a sidenote rather then a whole plot point.

I did love the addition of small excerpts from the "sacred texts" at the start of each chapter, even though they made my physically repulsed (more so because I know there are many real people who believe this exact same crap).
Finally, it was also very refreshing to see the bad guys just get ripped to shreds at the end, with no other reason than revenge. Was it ethical? Probably not. Was it satisfying to read? Hells yes.

"There was no future here. There was only this moment and its isolation rendered it invincible."

I loved this standalone dark academia fantasy. The magic system was so complex, detailed and well-thought out. The worldbuilding was amazing, built brick by brick with societal issues that cut deep - the negative effects of patriarchy, greed, ego, misogyny, sexism, classism, racism. So many topics to unpack with a dash of magic that just added another high-stake power in this book's dynamic.

We follow two main characters, Sciona and Thomil. My favorite character from the beginning was Thomil. I loved his grit, his love of culture, him as a whole. Sciona had a lot of character development and by the end of the book, I was sobbing because of everything she was able to accomplish.

I feel like this story was exactly what I needed at this time. With the way the world has been lately, I toast to the same thing as Sciona and Thomil at the end, "To hope."

This book was very heavy on my heart and should be given a proper amount of time to fully absorb and go through in order to savor reading it for the first time. So many aspects of hard to stomach moments, including abuse, murder, and sexual harrasment, but overall, I'm glad I was able to bear witness to this story.

I loved how this story felt really full circle, whenever an author alludes back to moments that happened in the beginning of the book at the end, as well, I always feel so much nostalgia. Like the crossing, the toasts that Sciona and Thomil had made, so many details that tugged on my heartstrings as I watched the characters I love go through so much hardship.

Such a good book I highly recommend this. This story also reminded me of Shingeki no Kyojin and Those Who Walk Away from Omelas.

Chapter 22 where Sciona and Thomil have a flash back to the night before their world was about to change and they *finally* kissed. God I sobbed. The way Thomil loved her. The way all she wanted at the end was his love, too. Sciona saying, to hope, and him returning it by saying to hope, Highmage Freynan. Got me fucked upppp.

I don’t even know what or how to write this review. A well written very compelling story, but a terribly horrific subject matter. It’s hard to like something so terrible. Read with caution. See trigger warnings.

A very driven young lady, rejects the crushing male dominance of her society to prove herself amongst the top magic wielders. Only to find out that the magic she has loved above all else comes with a deadly cost. Good does not always win. Books don’t always have happy endings. Some are just sad tales of what could easily become our realities, and in someways were and still are.

Phew.

This book was so tremendously innovative. It turned out to be an entirely different experience than I thought it would be, in a great way.  While I never ended up “liking” or relating well to any of the characters, I was fully invested in their fates. The author does an incredible job mashing genres together, which led to a magical, but thought provoking story.

Blood over Bright Haven had a solid plot, though there were some choices I would’ve done differently—Sciona is meant to think differently, but a few decisions felt rushed or a bit silly. The book was tense, fast-paced, and well-written. While most relationships felt a bit shallow, Sciona and Thomil’s bond was wonderfully developed. The message was quite dramatic and on the nose, but it hit hard—I cried a lot during the final quarter. I really enjoyed the setting and the magical system. It's a good read, but you should be stable when reading and prepared to be crushed.
