I love that I always know exactly what I'm getting when I open a new Nico Jaye story - a full-frontal, angst-free, smuff assault that leaves my insides feeling like a great, big marshmallow.

The premise of this story had me hooked from the get-go. Maybe it was because I have a friend that is a university professor in Medieval Studies and Norse mythology like David, or maybe it was because I had to listen to firefighter after firefighter groan and tell me, "we're more than just cats in trees!" when I was working on a museum exhibit for a local fire department a few years ago. Either way, this story was just like real life only... smuffier.

Loved it! :D

This are the ones I love. Not perfect mc's, just humans in search of love and companion.

A pleasant story about two guys coming together, both with a bit of history that makes them a bit gun shy to start with.
Despite it's short length, the story moved slowly through their inital meet and greet - though David is probably the only person who didn't realise Zach was gay!
Not really long enough to get a full feel but a good lunch/coffee break read.

I received a copy of this book from the author via the DBML program in exchange for an honest review.

Where There’s Smoke by Nico Jay was a very good short story featuring David, a college professor, and Zach, a fireman. The two are neighbors but they don’t meet until Zach saves David’s cat Astrid from a tree. David is attracted to Zach but he is recovering from a bad break-up and is also sure Zach is straight so he tries to keep his feelings and attraction to Zach buried. The story really doesn’t give much of Zach’s side of things but the two eventually admit to the mutual interest (with the help of a little old lady in the neighborhood). Overall an enjoyable, quick read.

I enjoy it

It was sweet, and I like fluff but it all seemed fast but I enjoyed it. It was nice .

This was such a sweet romance. David and Zach were just so emotionally open and healthy for each other. There is ZERO angst. The flirting is off the charts. The pacing is spot on, which I was worried about given that it's such a short story. But this is just the beginning of their relationship together. It's how they start dating, not how they live out their lives. Forever isn't sworn, but it's believed. I loved that David and Zach are both "older" characters, late-30s and early-40s respectively, they KNOW who they are. There's not drama because they know what they want, and need, and deserve. They're fully grown up. This is a great read for when you need something quick, sweet and satisfying. I would wish to see more of them, but I think this is the perfect glimpse all on it's own.
