Big on positivity and being the change agent in your own life. Anecdotes mainly north American males ... Some good lessons particularly if you feel you're in a rut.

The Lemonade Life was the perfect dose of inspiration while also being very relatable. Friedman shares advice and examples of how to live life on your own terms by being more aware of the control we have over our thoughts and emotions. This is what he calls The Lemonade Life.

Taking control helps give you the ability to have more positive changes in your own life. You will feel like you are in the driver's seat instead of everyone and everything around you. While we can't always control what happens to us, we can control how we respond and move forward.

Friedman introduces the five internal "switches" we can all introduce into our own lives that can help get us to this place. These switches have to do with your perspective, risk, independence, self-awareness, and motion to work and create the life you want. When these switches all work together, you will see your life through a new lens which helps you live The Lemonade Life.

After introducing the 5 switches, he talks about how Lemon Lifers would look at different circumstances and then how a Lemonade Lifer would see and utilize the same situation. Mindset and who you surround yourself everyday are such huge factors in not only who you are a person but who you become. I thought Friedman did an excellent job at presenting how risk and mistakes can help us grow and this was such an inspiring part of the book for me.

I got so much out of this book and I know it is one I will refer back to again and again. While not every section was totally applicable to my own life, there was something I was able to get out of each of them. I loved the idea that The Lemonade Life isn't a destination but a way of life. When we know ourselves, use the tools we have and work towards our own personal goals, we have the ability to live full and happy lives right where we are and as we grow. Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins Leadership for an advanced copy of this book.

The book in 3 sentences/summary:

Change your life by making five switches (perspective, risk, independence, self-awareness and motion)

Determine what kind of ‘Lemon Lifer’ you are (Eternal Excuser, Steady Settler, Change Chaser).

Shift to become a Daring Disruptor instead.

My impressions:

The Lemonade Life is filled with surface-level advice which very rarely gets backed up with evidence. It tries to go into so many different areas of life and business that it can barely go into detail on any of them. Leaving the reader feel like they missed something (this reader right here).

Zack is a big fan of alliteration which is obvious with all the names he gives to things he has made up. Its overuse makes these names distracting and so it’s hard to take in much of what he’s saying.

Sadly The Lemonade Life is a book that has an identity crisis. It’s incredibly unclear who the book is for, especially when in one chapter the author talks about workplace habits and in another building a business. It doesn’t help that the name and subtitle of the book is ‘How to fuel success, create happiness, and conquer anything’. It’s far too vague.

Should you read it? (who would benefit from this):

I sadly wouldn’t recommend this book.

What I personally got from the book:

This book taught me that there’s no real need to create made-up names for everything, it’s self-indulgent and distracting.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway. This is a self-development book that is super easy to read and has some actionable activities. I do think it would be most valuable for people who are younger, just starting out in their careers, and/or have limited life experience. Definitely worth reading if you want a gut check and want some activities to assess your direction or need tools for helping you make choices.

When I first read the title of this book, I thought "oh look another book on being a happier shinier version of me...making the lemons in my life into lemonade...yea yea"...boy am I glad I gave this book a chance and read it! This book is way more than a few feel good stories for you to compare yourself too, the lemonade life gives you actionable "switches" you can make in your life to be able actively live your life with purpose and endless possibilities. Instead of a recipe for lemonade you get a recipe for "the lemonade life", the life we all want to live, the beginning pathway to leading a fuller life where we actively reach our full potential each and every day. The book is organized well into sections and is easy to follow. I enjoyed the diagrams, charts, and exercises throughout the book, which kept me personally engaged as I was reading. This is my life, today is my day, and with the author's advice in this book I am putting in the hard work to live "the lemonade life" and become a "lemonade lifer"! I highly recommend this book, great read for anyone!

I received an early copy of this book from HarperCollins Leadership, but all thoughts and recommendations are solely my own.

I thought this book would be more personal development but turned out to be more business-centered. Lots of good ideas but not super applicable to someone who doesn't work in a corporate setting. Easy read with many interesting examples.

The Lemonade Life is honestly a guide to living your very best life. It breaks down the difference between Lemon Lifers & Lemonade Lifers, providing extensive details into the habits and traits of each and the simple (not easy) switches it takes to go from a Lemon Lifer to a Lemonade Lifer. It takes conventional wisdom and turns it on its head by giving examples you’ll relate to. There is so much practical, ready-to-use guidance in this book. Within a few pages, I was hooked and taking action!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am providing an honest review of my opinions on its contents.
