It's a book about hockey, but not about hockey at all. A story that explores the human condition through characters and their role in the community and relation to each other. Each character has their colorful and unique story, no one character really being what I would consider the "main character"—something that reflects how life is, each of us going through life doing our part of the whole. This book is filled with a lot of complicated and intense emotions, with each person making hard decisions and making mistakes, the way we also go through our lives, making hard decisions or making mistakes and processing them.

Beartown tackles difficult concepts, creates complex characters, and taught me the word for Norwegian currency so it has that. However, Backman’s style and voice come off as entirely too pleased with himself. Dialogue was not believable - all platitudes and heavy handed moral statements.

This book came highly recommended and we read it for book club. It starts a little slow as Backman dives into the lives of many many characters throughout the town. Sometimes it was hard to keep who’s who straight but overall I thought it was a great book. It deals with very heavy themes and trauma and the institutions that let things like this happen. I want to read the other books in the series too.

This book is filled with juicy small town drama, but big TW for a sexual assault being a huge part of the rising and falling action.
I am hypercritical of fiction that is going to make SA a major or minor plot point, this book doesn’t receive any less criticism.

While I thought the flaws of Beartown and its inhabitants were enthralling and kept me hooked, I couldn’t help but feel like the SA lack of resolve seemed weak. However maybe that’s the point? Overall was a decent book but a little hard to push through at times. If you like insight into many characters lives, a morally gray environment, and, lest we forget, hockey; this book may be for you. Definitely an out of my comfort zone read.

First audiobook so took a while to get used to. The plot was quite a difficult subject matter to listen to but I really enjoyed the ay the story unfolded. It highlighted the pressure put on young people in a small town where everyone knows each other, and shone a spotlight onto victim blaming. It also brought up the topic of conversation around if people of prominence are a lot of the time dismissed from the crimes they have committed because they have money, fame, sporting prowess etc. Lots of different important topics covered in this book against the backdrop of an ice hockey town. Loved the character of Benji. Enjoyed the ending too. Probably will leave as a stand alone book although i know it is a series.
