A short read to last one sitting, and which reads like a children's story for adults even though I don't doubt this was any part of the author's intention, i.e. this was pretty easy to wolf down. It may be a poem but it reads like a novella, courtesy to the translator, for better or for worse. Despite being a medieval text, it has all the power of a modern mystery and no prospective reader should have the ending spoiled for them. Or anything in the middle. If you just sit down and read, with no expectations or knowledge except the thrill offered by the description at the back of the book, you will, I think, experience for yourself the best of its plot twists.

"If fate is kind or cruel, man still must try. "

Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's round table, goes on a quest to fulfill an oath to a mysterious, dangerous stranger. This is essentially one long poem with a bouncing verse, and I recommend listening to the audiobook version narrated by Bill Wallis.

As this is such a short read (only around 2500 lines), I don't have too much to say. It's a fun story and the Green Knight is kinda cool. Gawain is okay, as far as knights go, but not all that impressive one way or the other.

I really liked this edition. Armitage's translation tries to capture some of the sound of the original — it has his translation on one page, and the original on the facing page — but it rarely sounds too forced. He uses a lot of alliteration and rhyming, and it's usually to good effect. Most instances are obvious when reading it silently, as I did, but I would occasionally say it out loud just to hear it and it really does make a difference. He makes a note about this in his intro, since some of the alliteration comes where the word is accented (i.e., it's not all the initial sound).

Anyway, I was hoping that reading it would explain the weird giants scene in the movie and, it turns out, they're just as weird in the original, even though the scene is much briefer.

Tira totalmente do ambiente do livro

Read for my degree. Was enjoying it until Gawain put the blame for his weaknesses on the female gender
