This book was wild. The first 50 pages were kind of a slog to get through and I didn't like "Now" Lane for a long time, but slowly she grew on me. I took a break after those 50 pages and read two other YA books before coming back, and the plot picked up enough quickly to really hook me again. I liked that for a long time you thought you knew a lot, but there was a lot of information that was kept under wraps. The author does a great job of hiding it but making you think that you know. It was a pretty disturbing read and not at all what I expected it to be like, but in the end I enjoyed the mystery.

The plot left a little to be desired for me, but the characters are very well fleshed out and I found myself empathizing even when I hated it.
Graphic: Incest, Violence, and Abortion

Predictable, but still a pretty good read.

This is a heartbreaking/disturbing story of a teenager who looses her mother to suicide and goes to live with her grandparents. She meets family she didn’t know and after the summer ends up running away only to return years later when her cousin goes missing. This story will take you into the secrets of a dysfunctional family.

What a glorious bit of writing. The Roanoke Girls is a study in the lifelong scars abuse leaves. As seen through the first-person perceptive of Lane, the last surviving Roanoke girl, we are brought along on a trip of small town Kansas and all the secrets hidden behind polite smiles and the pretty house of the one rich family in town. I won't lie; it was hard to read without shuddering at some points, but that only speaks to the amazing talent of Amy Engel. I loved every bit of it and I will be reading more of her work.

Read for The Reading Rush 2020
Challenge: Read a Book that starts with the word "The"
This is a really dark book. I was feeling so weird throughout the whole thing but it was so incredibly addicting. Which is kind of the point of this story, I guess.
It was pretty obvious to me what was going after the first 35% of the book, but it never got boring nonetheless.
