I just couldn’t get into it. I felt like I was just reading words, not a story. Just wasn’t for me but I loveeeee the cover so much.

I loved the first set of short stories however, once ladies’ brunch finished, I quickly lost interest. I wish I had the option to rate ladies’ brunch separately because it really was amazing, but alas, this will be my first entry into my DNF pile :,)

A slow burn. This one deserves several re-reads and some deep thoughts.

I found this collection to be extremely poignant. Through these interweaving stories, Lore manages to conjure a vivid picture of old school New York, of friendship and of aging. Each story was moving, and touched my soul in a new and unexpected way. I found my self totally transported in to the inner lives of these women. There was a persistent feeling of melancholy present in this collection, a sense of wistfully looking back over the rest of the story from the end- of feeling how the tapestry of our lives- our experiences and those we experienced them with make up the parts of who we are. This authors style of writing is uniquely her own, poetic and yet thoroughly readable. I would love to read more stories centered around these women lives- a demographic we sadly see little favorable or true to life representation of in literature (or media as a whole). But I will happily seek out the rest of Segals back catalogue, especially her New Yorker pieces, to fill the void in the meantime.

One of the sentences in the book goes something like « I stood in wet grass and waited for nothing » that’s what it felt reading this book. I kept wondering why is this person writing? Why is this published? The stories read like they are about nothing that go nowhere. The plus of this book is that it can serve as an encouragement for the most unsure wannabe writers, if this got published then anyone can write absolutely anything and get published.
