I respect the source material and the story Atakora is telling, but the pacing was just too slow and the structure too disjointed. I spent most of the time trying to figure out what year we were in and wondering how long it would take her to get to the information I'd already guessed at.

This novel twisted so many themes together and brought to life the intimacies, tragedies, and troubles of an enslaved and later formerly enslaved community of people. Violence, magic, rumours, secrets, healing, death, grief, sickness, belief, religion, hope all ran through all these pages as a puzzle was pieced together (one chapter in the past and one chapter in the present at a time). It's pacing was smooth and consistent, making it easy to disappear into for hours at a time.

this book seemed right up my alley and i was so excited about the premise but unfortunately i just could not get into the writing style of this book, which led to feeling confused and lost in the storyline.
