A few months ago, I remembered this book from when I had read it as a child. I could not remember much beyond the last line of the book, and how deeply it affected me. It's still as powerful.

I read this book because it fulfilled a category (award winner from the year I was born) in a book challenge in which I am participating. It is about two Jewish sisters in Holland who hide out in the upstairs room of a Dutch family's home during World War II to escape the Nazis. The premise is obviously extremely interesting but the book actually was somewhat boring. Perhaps that was deliberate to reflect the boredom the two girls felt shut upstairs in hiding for more than two years but I just didn't really enjoy this book. I felt that the main character, Annie, who is 10 when the hiding begins, was (even for a 10 year old) totally oblivious to what was going on and the seriousness of their situation for most of the book. That just didn't resonate given the circumstances.

Johanna Reiss describes her experiences during the Holocaust as a Dutch Jew. The main character, Annie, goes into hiding with her older sister, Sini. The sisters spend over two years together in hiding, with little communication and interaction with the outside world.
This novel appropriately addresses the difficult concept of the Holocaust in a way that young readers can understand and connect to. This novel provides a brief snapshot into the lives of real people who were caught up in horrific circumstances.

This book was about the holochaust and had lots of ways that Jews had to hide from the German soldiers. The two sisters stayed together and survived through this turmoil. I recommend this book for history lovers or someone who enjoys a sad yet true story.

A true story about the life of a Jewish family in Holland and specifically the two younger sisters who hid in an upstairs room of an older couple for nearly the entire war.
