This was a really fun book! It breaks the fourth wall fully calling out murder mystery tropes & directly addressing the reader with spoilers etc.
Although I really loved it & laughed out loud several times. There was just something missing from it to make it an all time favorite. But would definitely recommend!

I figured out the villain about half way through but there were still lots of things I didn’t figure out.

Delightful. This is essentially the classic whodunnit version of Starter Villian. Loved it.

I really enjoyed my time with the Cunningham family, although perhaps I should have saved this for colder weather and when I was less busy.

The atmosphere was beautiful, Ernest as a narrator was exactly what you wanted from the very first page - a bit sarcastic, observant, and every so often broke the fourth wall. The story is a mix of character and narrative driven, and each character felt fleshed out, at least through the eyes of Ernest, written as he knows it (which is sometimes to the best of his ability). Information was trickled throughout the book, and I was 1/8 right when the major reveal happens towards the end of the book. And I say 1/8 because I guessed a certain characters involvement, but only very briefly, and not with any conviction.

In spite of all the final section of the book, this was a cosy read. I managed to read about 110-130 pages in relatively quick time (probably about 2-2.5 hours in the three blocks of reading I did). I do think, for myself, it was maybe ever so slightly overhyped, but I can see how it was high on other people's favourite books of the year for 2023. The reason it wasn't a five star read for me is because I enjoy more psychological and thriling books over cosy crime, but I'll be picking up the next book in the series when it releases in paperback.
