if i had read this book on my own accord my rating might be different. i personally enjoyed the writing style, it really hooked me in and i wasn’t bored reading. however, as someone Holden’s age i wasn’t able to understand or relate to his perspective in some ways.

i've been looking forward to reading this for the longest time, so i was a little worried when i didn't really enjoy it to begin with. it wasn't what i was expecting at all, and it felt as though the plot might not go anywhere, but wow it really touched me by the end. i think i'll like it even more on reread (though that's not happening anytime soon)
editing to add (because i don't think my review would be complete without this): the language really makes this book! it's so distinct, and has so much character, and is so teenage-boy, i loved it

I met Holden Caulfield for the first time on a crisp, cold night in January of 2016. I had wanted to meet him for some time, but never given an introduction. Our paths finally crossed in the first week of the New Year by random chance at my local public library. It was my first visit in a decade and a half. He, a 16-year-old from New York City in 1951. Myself, a 32-year-old from the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia in 2016...

reading it at 15 and then 25 was a true blessing, one I didn’t plan. there’s so much about it that only adulthood and maturity can help you understand, but all so realistically told in such a teenaged voice. call me a pshycopath, I love it

I absolutely hated this book. I don't understand how it is so popular. I hate it so much that it's turned into an inside joke with my friend because I get so angry any time it's mentioned.

Eh. There's just not much else to say. Holden is incredibly annoying. Though I understand he is supposed to have some mental problems. I got annoyed with how many times the phrases "and all", "no kidding", and "I really did" were said. Overkill. Still don't understand why this is on the banned book list; many books contain sex, language, drinking, and drugs. And as far as it being an assassination trigger... I just find that laughable.
