Surprised myself when I realized that, despite my love for whodunnit movies like Knives Out and See How They Run, I'd never read any Agatha Christie novels to where they owe their inspiration. And her reputation precedes her, with a bookstore employee stopping me to gush over how much they love this novel, and Christie's other works, even some 85 years after publication.

After a slow thirty pages of character introductions and names I thought I'd never remember, everything after becomes literally impossible to put down. Reading a bit before bed easily turned to being up past 3 am. The characters and their archetypes become quickly identifiable, though it helps that the numbers dwindle rapidly. The mystery keeps you guessing, and while it'd be difficult to solve based on narrative clues (it is, after all, meant to be an unsolvable crime), the reveal is satisfying and makes immediate sense. There's some period typical racism and attitudes towards women (though much has been edited out, including the original title). These record scratch moments are fairly brief,  but worth noting as people have different limits.

That being said, Christie's storytelling lives up to the hype and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Agatha Christie at some of her most genre defining -- you know all along that there's some trick, but without a Belgian detective to point it out to you, you go through the whole book not entirely sure what it could be.

A group of seemingly random people are invited to a mysterious island for various reasons. Quickly, they realize they all have a secret that has led to their invitation.... And may lead to their deaths, as dictated by an eerie children's rhyme. What's worse, the killer seems to be among them-- but who? Will they figure out whodunnit in time for anyone to escape the Island?

This was a quick read and, as Christie always is, was good fun that leaves a slight tingle up your spine. None of the characters are at all likeable (and those that verge on being so don't fare very well), and the ending is a bit of a twist for twist's sake, but this one is worth the read to understand the way modern mystery thrillers were shaped.

I enjoyed this book! I did guess the murderer early in the book but I couldn't have predicted the twist. A short and enjoyed read although a tad slow in places.

Wow. This was quite something! I couldn't help myself but read the second half in one sitting.

Ten people are invited to "Soldier Island" under different pretences. It turns out that each one caused the death of someone in a way that was untouchable by law.
One after another they all die.

Here are some of the guesses/suspicions I had while reading. None of them were correct.
When Mr Rogers was seen outside and very shortly afterwards was seen in the attic, I thought he might have a twin or doppelganger.
The way Ms Brent wrote in her diary and also went outside on her own... Very suspicious!
When the last five sat in the drawing room and we could read each ones thoughts I thought the last one was Blore and therfore suspected him.
