MM Romance
Creature From The Black Lagoon Retelling
3.5 Stars ⭐️

While this one is definitely a step up from the first book in this series, I guess I was expecting this series to be a bit more scary considering it’s supposed to be MM horror romance retellings. This fits into the campy horror category though and made me laugh much like the 1954 black and white movie did when I watched it with my dad years ago. In the movie, the creature was a true monster, kidnapping a woman who then needed to be rescued but this one portrayed the “monster” as a gentle, caring creature who just wanted to nurse his captive back to health.

Like the original, this takes place in the Amazon with some scientists looking for a specific type of bacteria with ph properties only found in certain types of water or some shit. It was a bit too science forward because I did not need to know all about the different types of water (clear, white, black, royal etc) when I was just here for the monster dick, but I digress. Our narrator Kittisak gets hurt but then rescued by the creature and taken to his underwater cave lair where he heals up quite quickly due to some magical mud and they discover they are both hot for each other.

Everyone should know by now that I read monster books for the weird appendages and this book did not disappoint! Holy shit the anatomy in this book was hot and um someone needs to make this into a vibrator because I’m jealous. LoL

MC is a wet blanket who doesn’t appreciate being in the Amazon, everyone seems to lack emotional maturity, and the first thing MC thinks when he sees a swamp monster in his tent is “…would” which is so utterly unrealistic.

Kittisak Amarin is not doing well in college. To earn extra credit and a passing grade, he joins his professor on an expedition in the Amazon to locate a bacteria that can science words some copper ore or something. What Kittisak (Kitty) finds is a hot humanoid amphibian creature.

Y'all. I was.. I mean. I read this and enjoyed it. It is surprisingly sweet considering Kitty gets it on like...A LOT...with a non-human humanoid creature. Shu is kind and takes care of Kitty. The world building of the Rife creatures is kinda fascinating.

That's it. That's the review. You'll love this if you're a monster fucker.

I was expecting something dark, I guess because it's a retelling of the horror classic Creature from the Black Lagoon, but this was surprisingly sweet. Like near The Sea Monster's Mate levels of sweetness (but with more drama and less mpreg)!

Kittisak is in the Amazon for one reason only, to pass Biology. His professor is searching for a rare bacteria and has brought Kittisak along as his assistant. He's miserable, but at least the grade boost means he won't be letting his parents down by failing college. Soon things become downright scary when Kittisak gets between a river monster and the expedition's trigger-happy a-hole. Next thing he knows he's separated from the group and injured, but being cared for by the most handsome monster he's ever met.

Kittisak was such a relatable character. The way he just assumes he's having a sexy monster dream and is sad when the monster doesn't try to jump his bones made me laugh! This isn’t necessarily a comedy, but I still laughed plenty of times during my readthrough.

Speaking of which, this isn’t horror either. Not in the slightest. So if that was a turn off for you or something you were hoping for, keep that in mind.

I loved that Shu spoke just enough English for them to be able to communicate, but not enough that the differences led to some cute moments. The whole meshing-of-worlds thing is always fun to read about. No major miscommunication, just little scenes where they take the time to understand each other. Those are my favorite!

The world-building was great for how short the book is. Kittisak got to learn a lot about Shu’s people and language. Even though I'm questioning how the fish people knew English. I can see them picking up a human language, sure, but English in the middle of the Amazon is pretty funny. Guess they get a lot of tourists. That would explain the blender…

Kittisak and Shu were damn near perfect together. Supportive and caring partners, as well as pretty fire in the bedroom!! If you're a fan of unique biology in monster romances you'll find some fun stuff here too. Not only is Shu's description beautiful, but the description of his *ahem* fun parts are pretty interesting too. Naturally, Kittisak is very into it!

Point is, you'll have fun here. This book is sweet with a good mix of romance, steam, and adventure.

When I first found the series on amazon I was excited for them to be horror retellings. And while I very much enjoyed the first book and now this one, it's not horror. Maybe more on the cutesy sweet Halloween kind of thing. For me this was a 3.5. I loved that sho (the lake monster) was human enough to make things more possible but was different enough to make things very interesting. The romance was on the more wholesome and sweet side and I liked the way they learned about each other. But it was lacking in the plot department, there where other things going on than the relationship altough not very much to add effect. But enjoyable nevertheless.
Didn't expect this series to be so sweet, was expecting more of a darker romance/horror.

This is a horror story retelling without the horror. It fits more into the 'saved by a monster and they fall in love' trope.

There was a plot that was consistent throughout the book. The ending was a bit unrealistic but I don't care, the plot wasn't the point of the book. I appreciated that it was there though.
