Had to read this book for a college class, and thus wasn't expecting much. But my god, what a beautiful, heartbreaking book. Found myself gasping and laughing and sighing out of sadness for these characters, many times throughout the book. Beautiful imagery throughout, will be looking for more books by this author.  Profs teaching English classes: assign this book, your students will be better for it.

I liked the poetic feel of this book. The writing and imagery is stellar, and the inclusion of racism and incarceration in this deeply moving story of a family doing their best was incredible. I disliked how wordy some parts got. Sometimes it took away from the story. Only a couple instances though. I also got a bit confused when picking up and putting down due to the jump around of character narratives. That’s why i rated it a 4.5. I would say this is a straight through read.  However, depiction of the humanity of ALL characters was beautiful as well. That made the multiple narratives worth it in the end. All in all a beautiful and compelling story. I actually cried. I will be reading her work again! All the best to Jesmyn Ward! I recommend this book to all Americans, but especially Black people all over the diaspora. This is an important piece of work.

Not quite 5 because I had a hard time following at times, but such an amazing book. I empathised deeply with the characters, even if Leonie was a hard-to-love character.

This book is really raw and hard-hitting, and it has about every trigger warning possible. It's a world that many of us who are white and middle-class don't know and have been able to ignore as the faraway south. But the issues that this family faces are solvable, and it's all of our responsibility to change policy to put those social programs in place. This book is also a great anti-"classic literature" example - it's lyrical and winding and shows that there is not one way to write.
