Pleased with ending, slow read- felt like it wasn’t going anywhere until the end

Spoiler set in Rome 19500s. Hal accepts an invitation to a party where he meets Stella and they have a 1-night stand. A year later coincidentally he meets her again when the Contessa hires him to write a news article on the movie she is producing. They travel by boat to several towns to promote it. Hal reads the journal of the sea captain the movie is based on. Stella is married to a rich American. Hal and Stella exchange stories. She witnessed the death of her little brother in the war and feels responsible, is living homeless when she meets Truss who marries her. Hal feels responsible for the death of his friend in the war. This similarity binds them
Together and they have a secret affair. On the eve of them running away together Stella disappeared and is assumed to be dead. As the story ends we find out she left and found her uncle in Switzerland. Her husband dies. And I’m the end Stella and Hal meet up again.

I really enjoyed the female protagonist’s development and backstory. I thought her trajectory honored her character and was a refreshing take on a character who would typical be treated as a damsel in destress.
