Representative Omar’s book is a reminder to anyone looking to build coalitions, whether in politics or in community activism, that there is more we have in common than sets us apart. Her first-hand account of her upbringing in Somalia and then in the Utange Refugee Camp was packed with a torrent of emotions and incredible hardships that speak to her continual perseverance to this day as a community leader and congresswoman. Her story should be read by all those seeking to improve their community for the better. I’m so much more thankful to have been represented by Representative Ilhan Omar while she was in the Minnesota state house now having read her powerful life story. Mahadsanid

I really enjoyed this insight into Rep. Omar’s life and political ascendancy. I’ve always respected her, but now I feel like I have a better idea who she is and I respect that even more.

Obviously her life story is inspiring and important to tell, but this memoir was lifeless and badly written.

My fiancee is reading Trump's niece's book. I couldn't subject myself to that, so I chose something a little more inspirational. A quick read. She spends a good deal of time in her childhood and her transition to living in America. She keeps it very professional once her political career starts: she mentions her children, but does not talk of them much (their inclusion was actually jarring at times). A solid read, though.

This was accessible, relatable, and overall well written.
I had an advance copy - I would buy this in bulk to share with others. I believe that her ideology is spot on and I wish her the most success while she is in Congress.

I loved this book. Such a great reminder of the American Dream, and the beautiful people who make up America. I am proud to have Ms. Omar as my representative in the House. Her bravery, hard work, and tireless determination inspires me to find more ways to help my neighbors.

I love Ilhan!! She is so so inspiring!
However not a great memoir. Great story, but not great writing. It would have benefitted from being longer and including small moments that give it life. I’m not sure how much is ghost written (verifiably some), but we get pretty much none of Ilhan’s voice in this. The most character building we get from her are the (albeit very good) tweets within this.
Her life’s story really gave me a different perspective on my future, though. OHS puts SO much emphasis on our choice of college, but ultimately what we are able to give to the world is so much more important than indulging in petty elitism. Ilhan talks a lot about how experiencing the “people’s America” is really important to representing them. And also that being generally empathetic of other people experiencing adversity is our duty as a human.
She has such a grip on her priorities and was in many places so honest about herself that I don’t think I’ve felt more inspired by someone’s story.
Worth the read!!
