Because I had this as an audiobook, there are w few stories that went completely over my head so I can’t fully attest to every moment of the collection. That being said, I really enjoyed the strange and diverse array of concepts that the different narrators found themselves in the middle of. Audiobooks make it a little difficult to catch when the narrator would change, but it was a cool moment to see the accent of one character signify a POV shift in one of the stories. As a Chinese American, I also really appreciated the relatable experiences with microaggressions, family dynamics that were key to the narratives.

This collection of short stories is a bit fucked up. A few are haunting, a few are gross, but all are engaging and so memorable. After every short story I wanted to scream in frustration because it felt like the end was close, close, close ... and then BAM she ends it and starts fresh. I wanted so much more in the best way. This is my first book by Ling Ma and she has instantly become a favorite author. The way her mind works and her voice fascinates me. It's bold, it's scary, it's weird, it's truth telling, it's cathartic. I would highly recommend, but there is some body horror in here that could be triggering to those who are sensitive to it.

Disturbing, strange, unsettling, disquieting... I can't describe this book accurately, but I guess that's a start. I loved Severance and short stories aren't typically my favorite format, but Ling Ma has done it again, though some pieces were more enthralling than others. The last one, Tomorrow, actually made me gag with horror, which I normally avoid at all costs, so thanks for getting me out of my comfort zone.
I did have some trouble figuring out when each story ended and the next began, going to start begging audiobook producers to leave more of a pause between chapters and put more stress on chapter titles, but maybe that's just me.
