Yeti Lovemaking and Tomorrow, conceptually, are more my speed - however I found my favorite stories to be Los Angeles, Oranges and Pecking Duck. G and Returning hit the sweet spot of having interesting and out-there premises, but giving me everything I enjoyed from the three favorites of mine: such intimate and messy human moments with who you love, and why - through it all - it is still worth it. Love is still worth navigating when it feels like who you give your heart and time to come at such conflict.

strange & dream-like with sudden bursts of tenderness. there’s a passage in Peking Duck that says, “A boy, at best, can adore his mother, but a girl can understand her. When the doctor told me it was a girl, I thought, Now I will be understood. That was my happiest moment. The idea of a daughter.”

faves:  G, yeti lovemaking, office hours, Peking duck

Because I had this as an audiobook, there are w few stories that went completely over my head so I can’t fully attest to every moment of the collection. That being said, I really enjoyed the strange and diverse array of concepts that the different narrators found themselves in the middle of. Audiobooks make it a little difficult to catch when the narrator would change, but it was a cool moment to see the accent of one character signify a POV shift in one of the stories. As a Chinese American, I also really appreciated the relatable experiences with microaggressions, family dynamics that were key to the narratives.

i actually loved this, even if it took me a minute to wrap my head around some of the overarching metaphors, the writing was gorgeous 'nd i'll definitely be checking out 'severance' by the same author. :) none of the stories really fell flat to me either, i definitely had my favourites, those being 'the office', 'peking duck' & 'tomorrow' but all of them were great. not being too detailed in this rvw because there's just ,, so much going on.

boobclub pick with mari !!
