Like the first two books in the series, this one takes a bit to really get going, but once it does, it moves quickly.

Ultimately, it ended up being my favorite of the series. It gives great insight into what it is like to live with severe anxiety, and it portrays this without falling into the far-too-frequent narrative of anxiety being a disease that must be cured. I came away from the book understanding anxiety in a way that I had previously struggled to do, and that understanding has helped me better support those in my life with anxiety.

A wonderful end to what is my new favourite series of books! This book's main theme is all about mental health, in particular putting a spotlight on anxiety. A someone who suffers from anxiety, it was a very realistic depiction (almost felt like a call out at some points) and it was no suprise to find out the author also suffers. Adrian was relatable and we also got back my beloved Monty to join in the adventure! It was nice to see where the characters were now and how things had progressed over the last 20 years. Also a lot better paced than the other two books with the adventure starting within the first few chapters instead of half way through. Only nitpick was that Adrian (and a couple other people) seemed way too comfortable with Monty's sexuality for the 1700s. I guess this was to further the Monty plot without the homophobia but it was a little too unbelivable for me to have Adrian find out and within days Monty was openly making jokes to him about gay sex. Also there wasn't very much Percy in the book and I would have loved to get to know Louisa more. But other than that, very enjoyable!

Adrian suffers from Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and this is explained very realistically and in detail throughout the book. This also includes descriptions of panic attacks and in one case a delusion which leads Adrian to

put leeches on himself

which could be considered a form of self harm (but not deliberate). Several characters also discuss and describe having suicidal thoughts as well as suicide attempts.
