This was honestly not as terrible as I thought???
A Complicated Love Story Set in Space (sick title) is about a boy named Noa who wakes up on a spaceship called Qriosity that is set to explode. Aboard the ship he meets DJ and Jenny, who also have no idea how they got there. Together the three face the dangers of space, involving many challenges but the biggest challenge is Noa falling in love with DJ.
This book was ridiculous and in the end I did end up liking it but also ??? The first half of this book is just one wacky thing after another and it was fine but it all felt like unnecessary side quests and almost all of the action happened off page. And for what? DJ and Jenny are so one dimensional and they never get out of that. Jenny is literally the same spunky side female character that is best friends with every m/m relationship.
DJ and Noa are so angsty and their relationship had no real development. They were sweet but so bland. Sure you could say there is a story explanation for that but I could also just say you are lazy as hell. Maybe if DJ and Jenny had POVs too it would have been better but man, they were snoozeville.
The audiobook was so good but I apparently suck at listening so when something wild and completely obvious kept happening, I was just like wow this kid sure likes baking a lot.
I didn't have any idea where this story was going to go but still I gotta say I didn't expect it going there. At first I was like, oh no this is stupid. But then I was like oh well that is kinda cool?? Eventually I ended up liking where it was going, and it made it all feel like the random side quests actually had a reason. (But like did they REALLY.) I'm also trash for a very specific thing about DJ and Noa.
Black Mirror is literally referenced in the summary and I didn't even realize but this really does hit that and I'm so into that shit. What part does it hit though? Screwing a pig? Robot dogs? Banging your buddy in a video game? Controlling a pop star with drugs? xoxo, I'll never tell.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish!!!! It had such an interesting hook from the get go and the episodic feel gave me Stark Trek vibes that made me so happy. There were times where I really disliked Noa but halfway through, I understood his character better and liked him more. The climax, twist, and ending of this book is really the star of the show tho. I can genuinely say I didn’t see any of it coming but was so enamored and entertained by it all. Very fun world building and plot. It’s also an interesting commentary on the “bury your gays” trope that I loved. I highly recommend this!!!
Graphic: Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Medical trauma, and Suicide attempt
Moderate: Gun violence and Trafficking
The sexual assault and violence is described from first person in a story setting as in “this is how I was sexually assaulted” so it’s explicit but not super graphic. The “trafficking” is complicated and not in the traditional sense but I feel it’s fittingtheotheramber's review against another edition

If I had a nickel for every book I've read with space gays stuck in a space ship having to navigate life without knowing what's going on and where the story keeps restarting in weird ways, I've have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Okay, so this book wasn't exactly like The Darkness Outside Us, but it had similar vibes at some points. If you liked that book but wanted a little more levity and a plucky third character, this is probably the perfect book for you.
Honestly, this book was a RIDE. I never knew what was going to happen and every time I thought I had things figured out it shifted DRASTICALLY. I definitely liked parts more than others and it took me awhile to really warm up to Noa. I found him annoying at first, but once I got to know him, I appreciated him more. I loved DJ and that love only grew as the story went on. Despite the ups and downs, the story held my attention and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
The ending was a little more open-ended than I usually like, but the story wrapped up enough I felt satisfied. I wouldn't mind a sequel, though.

Well THIS book is something else. I have so many thoughts about this story that I can’t really get into without spoilers but honestly? Go into this book knowing nothing. It is fun, it’s cute, and it has some awesome things to say. The reread value on this book is fantastic and I can’t wait to read it again knowing everything.

I feel like it was written for a very young YA audience but then it covers things that probably aren’t suited for them? I wasn’t a huge fan of the crazy angsty-teen back and forth, but the last third of the book was actually not what I thought was coming at all (in a good way.) I think I see what he was trying to do and I think it’s probably amazing for some people, but not really for me.

Thank GOODNESS for that twist bc I almost DNF'd this. I depise the MC, I find him to be one of THEE most insufferable characters I have ever read. The twist, while it doesn't make up for how much I hate the MC, does provide good context for everything that we had scene thus far that made for a really interesting story. I can deal with characters I hate if I can have a good plot to pull me through and this had it 🙌🙌🙌
