Finally! A high fantasy book that's not just the same sexist, racist copy of middle earth! In fact, this is the high fantasy book I've wanted for years. Unique setting, diverse characters, well-written and a good plot. Bardugo is a smart feminist woman and the first to not blatantly copy what has been done before. Hallelujah! If I had to read about more white elves and male dwarves in the middle ages I think I was going to be sick.

TW: violence, gambling addiction, drugs, forced prostitution

It's not bad, but with all the hype around it, I expected a bit more. Let's see what the second book will be like.

A solid book, great world building and character descriptions. The only disappointment I experienced while reading was the ending was very rushed and the action scenes were not well described. The characters were also too young; they should be college age at a minimum. In my head-cannon the characters are 24+.
