Ali Hazelwood is back at it again with an overly quirky, fast talking, soft tiny human FMC and a pensive, brooding, closed-off giant broad MMC—as is her default. I don’t take fault with that, for the most part. Because I am often attracted to that aforementioned type of man. And I was attracted to Liam. But at what cost?? The ending scene was awkward and kinda weird, which was really disappointing because the potential was very nearly achieved.
There were things I really did like about this novella, but in the end it was more in a “checking it off my list” kinda way. The buildup was pretty good, as far as Mara and Liam’s chemistry, but there needed to be more tension, more pining. More moments of intensity, passion. Also, less stereotypical steminist propaganda which kinda defeats the purpose of a steminist story in the first place.
It was cute, though. And Ali’s writing is always funny and a breeze to get through. I just hoped for more overall story development and more variety in the characters from book to book.

Romance wise - There's clear signs of the characters trying to read that the other is ok with what's going on and when it comes to sex acts they confirm consent multiple times.
Comfortable and fun to read, good for if you're tired of books with ambiguous consent.
Moderate: Death and Death of parent
Minor: Misogyny and Sexual harassment

Her mentor, who was very close to, like a mother or cool aunt, died and left the protagonist a houseSpoiler
Her workplace is all guys and one is actively mysogynist, while the others merely observe without interference - One says supportive things but never moves to stop the mistreatment, and may be motivated to be nice primarily by his pants. The main romantic interest actively wants to reprimand the bad agents and encourages protagonist to report, but respects her agency and lets her handle it her way.chrstnlvly's review

It's a good thing this is a novella.
Spoiler
I don't think a whole novel needs to be written just to tell the story of how Mara and Liam fell in love.Spoiler
I just didn't like the way it ended. The spice scene was so out-of-the-blue, so abrupt to start even if I knew it was coming (it was still good smut, though).Best quote in the book: See, that's the thing I hate the most about adulting: at some point, one has to start doing it.
Same, Mara. Same.
