Fake dating tropes are my favorite and this is a really cute one.

oof. OOF. this was a rough one, y'all. i'll be the first to admit that i don't think christina lauren's books will ever do it for me in that

description

but i digress, this just didn't do it for me at all. the concept itself was romance gold (i'm a sucker for marriage of convenience), but holland was just so immature for her age it really turned me off? you're telling me that a twenty-five year old is still acting like a child 90% of the time? she doesn't let anyone explain anything, always assumes the worst, says she's the secondary character in her own life, yet thinks marrying a dude she's been semi-stalking for months is how she becomes the main character? yeah, nah. that ain't it. also, can we talk about how she fucks up and expects calvin to immediately forgive her, but when he's the one who makes a mistake, she immediately says they need to get a divorce? girl, read the room.

also, i really didn't need to hear holland's inner monologue about how much she wants to bang calvin every other page. we get it, she's incredibly horny, let's please focus on anything else.

the hard part about this is that i think it would've been 100% better if it wasn't completely told from hollands POV. if we got calvin's presective in here to break up holland's repetitive inner monologue, i think the book would've more enjoyable.

overall this isn't for me, but considering i did like christina lauren's 'the honey-don't list,' maybe i'll try their newer stuff again? from what i've gathered, they've improved a ton as a writing duo since this, so i'd be interested to see if i can relate to their newer stuff more than i did this.

We’ve all done embarrassing things under the influence of crush. Holland Bakker’s thing is taking the subway out of her way every day just to see (and hear) the busker she fancies perform. It’s harmless really, that is until one day she finds herself in the arms of her crush in a scenario even her most wayward of daydreams could not have drummed up. If she thought there unusual introduction would be the beginnings of sweet music they would make together, she’s sorely mistaken, in more ways than one.

There’s something undeniably relatable about Holland and from the outset it’s impossible to not like her. She’s down to earth and a little awkward in the cutest of ways, and I easily found myself cheering her on. Life has a plan for her and as quickly as her hope for something more is extinguished, a situation that would help both her and her crush greatly comes to light.

Calvin McLoughlin has big dreams of performing on Broadway but he never envisaged the cute woman he saves on the subway would be his ticket there. Their relationship is one of convenience; she helps him to stay in the country whilst his musical talent saves her uncle’s show. That’s what they tell themselves anyway.

The reality of the situation is the blossoming of an incredibly sweet and tentative romance. Roomies is the personification of an adorable romance, and lovers of unrequited loved should definitely make room for this on their must read pile.

The plot and characters are cliched. They’re likable enough but nothing made me WANT to keep reading.

Read it all in one day. Feel good, very nice falling in love bits, i wish the ending was a tiny bit longer, one more scene of them together would have been perfectly overindulgent. Liked it loads, very nice soft and light read !

I really like the get to know you phase of the book. I thought the ending was the weakest part. And many questions about eight years of couch surfing and having your uncles pay for you to line in NYC

UPDATE: This is 5/5 stars. I don’t know who I was trying to kid 😂

4.5/5 stars.

I just absolutely love the way these two ladies tell a romance. They are always so much fun and romantic and just a world-wind experience. They are never entirely feasible or translate to reality perfectly, but they are the perfect kind of binge-worthy romance.

I love that their stories are always equal parts fun and wild as they are serious and heartbreaking. I never feel like the characters aren't working towards a final goal together. It's never an easy ride or piece-of-cake romance, which is why they so perfectly pull at your heartstrings. What was so fun about this one was the romance trope that was used. Christina Lauren always chooses the best, and my favorite, romance tropes. This one utilizes the fake lovers trope, and it does it so well. I was completely gripped by the entire premise and felt the execution was flawless.

I did want just a little more emotion out of the story. I felt like it wasn't quite on the level of their Wild Seasons series, which we all know is an absolute favorite. I think what could have really brought it there would to have had Calvin's POV as well. I know this would have interfered with the twist of their relationship, but I think his voice overall would have added a lot.

Regardless, I still loved this novel. I can't wait to read more from them because I've just enjoyed everything so much, so far.
