I listened to the audiobook which is read by the author herself. You can hear the emotion and passion on the topic in her voice.

It was an incredibly graphic and horrific book to listen to but I could not stop listening. Jess manages to make a topic that is horrendous into a book you can’t put down. Her research skills are next level and the way she tells people’s stories with respect and dignity is commendable.

I spent almost the entire time shaking my head and cringing in shame that we live in a world this horrific and that I didn’t have a clue about the extent of domestic abuse even slightly. It was eye opening and a very interesting listen. I have learnt a lot.

An incredible read, with powerful insights into domestic abuse, the justice system, family violence and patriarchal entitlement. Well researched, comprehensive, challenging and hopeful, this book is a must read for all.

If you are someone who says “why didn’t they just leave?” When you hear about a woman being killed by her partner, this book is one you need to read!
This is an incredibly hard book to get through at times, but Jess Hill has done an incredible job of telling people’s stories respectfully and with reason.
This book made me cry and yell out in anger at so many ways the system has let down women and children. But I’m grateful for the knowledge Jess put into this book, it’s a book I wish all police officers, lawyers, social workers and psychologists had to read while in university. You can tell a lot of time and hard work went into this book and she really tried to show all the different lens domestic violence can be seen through.
