I hope Ahmed returns to this character and to early 1970s Detroit. It feels like there is a lot more story left here--it is beyond me why this was such a limited series. That compression caused the pacing to be startlingly uneven, nowhere more so than at the climax.

So good. And some things were good in a way that I missed them the first time and had to go back, at which point I was all, "Oooooooooooh!"

Honestly the most disappointing this about this comic is that there's not MORE of it – the noir horror atmosphere is engaging, and the beats pulled from murder mysteries, dectective noir, and supernatural horror make me wish this were a movie (or a TV series). Super enjoyable read.

Maybe even 4.5 stars?
I absolutely loved this. The main character is fabulous, the illustrations are enthralling, and the plot is highly entertaining. I’ll definitely be checking out more from this author and illustrator.

3 stars cause I’m not a big fan of hardboiled detective noir fiction. But I enjoyed the characters and especially liked Abbott and her paramours. Also Sgt. James was great. An honest historical supernatural mystery about a black woman reporter telling the truth in an age of rampant racism.

Abbott is so freaking cool. I don't know if I want to be her or be with her.

The 70's aesthetic was pleasing to look at while reading. The lingo, clothes, cars, and smoking everywhere because it hadn't been outlawed yet. I am here for it.

The fantasy aspect was a bit boring since the villain wasn't so scary.

SpoilerThe kiss in the end........ I loved it.

Elena Abbott is a badass journalist who fearlessly reports the truth regardless of opposition. The story evokes the nostalgia of thrilling 70s pulp movies that captivate the viewer and leave them wanting more. If you enjoy a blend of investigative journalism, supernatural elements, and a touch of messy romances, I recommend this book.
