The Reservoir Tapes by Jon McGregor

I believe this book is a companion to one of the author's other works, Reservoir 13, which I haven't read. On its own, I just don't think it's my type of book. It's told in short vignettes about characters that live around a small village. Some were interesting, but I found it overall to be a bit boring. The overarching story never gets resolved, or maybe I was just confused.

I absolutely love the cover though.

Conceived as a companion piece to his earlier novel Reservoir 13, Jon McGregor’s The Reservoir Tapes provides deeper insight into the lives of several select villagers. Taking place before Becky Shaw’s disappearance, each chapter fleshes the whereabouts, possible motives, and connections each person had to the missing girl. Less cyclical than Reservoir 13, this book maintains McGregor’s intimate portrayal of common lives. Events that would loom large over another series are mere flecks of light through the fog for McGregor. He is much more interested in the ripples these events have on a community and though Becky’s disappearance is the largest example, it is by no means the only trauma affecting this village. Readers expecting a resolution of the mystery will, again be disappointed, but those wishing to take another turn around the reservoirs will be in for a treat.

After reading Reservoir 13 and loving its subtle, quiet style, I was thrilled to see the Reservoir Tapes! The writing is beautiful, again, but the style is somewhat different and we get to see the whole story from some new perspectives - and some old ones but with new information not in the original. I don’t want to give anything away, but if you too enjoyed Reservoir 13, then you really need to read this!

It's been a while since I read Reservoir 13, but I slipped right into the lives laid out here.

It's snap shots of lives we partly know, it's little vignettesof characters we met once before.

And it's by Jon McGregor, so it's poetic and beautiful and soulful.
