I like Louis Lamour books. They are familiar and comfortable. They have also aged well. This book is no exception.

It was a satisfying enough read but I feel like it wrapped up too fast. I wanted more of these characters!!! I'll just have to settle for thinking about what came next!

Chronicles events in the young (and fictional) Echo Sackett's life as she travels to Pennsylvania to retrieve an inheritance. There she meets Dorian Chantry, who she will later wed. The next time we hear of her is when she is an old woman, husband dead, in a fight for her life and property, aided by Logan Sackett. It's interesting seeing how the Sackett family members, across years of history, tie in together in different ways in L'Amour's imagination.

Mostly noteworthy for its female protagonist, which is extremely rare for L'Amour--although Echo is basically your typical L'Amour protagonist in a skirt, so maybe it wasn't too much of a stretch for him to write after all. Brief and enjoyable but not one of L'Amour's best; there was some very weird POV hopping towards the end that was jarring and seemedingly accidental, and Echo's dialect changes by the page.

I did really love that whoever owned my copy before wrote this on the last page:
1) Finished reading 8-6-89--9:35AM
2)Finished reading 11-14-96 at 12:05AM

There's something magical about finishing a book and knowing that someone else finished it at a precise date and time, and liked it enough to stay up late to finish it. I wonder who it was and what they thought of it.
