Really, really good info/very informative and thought provoking. Definitely challenged some beliefs I had and expanded my understanding of ones I already held.
I will say that it gets more than a little repetitive with certain points it wishes to drive home (how many times can I read the phrase “community of communities”) which caused me to start skimming some parts near the end. It is also not a book i’d recommend to anyone wanting a quick read or something easy to understand; this book is a thinker. Would recommend if you’re more interested in the philosophical aspect of communitarianism and/or anarchism and have time to spare for your brain to hurt a little.

I read this as part of the Anarchist Political Ecology group, of which John has been a central organizer and participant. It is a wonderful balance of philosophical critique and practical examples of how we might approach our experiments in bioregional ecological communitarianism today, right now. I undoubtedly had my criticisms -- particularly about the Katrina chapter and also the overly long takedown of Bookchin -- but all in all it was a wonderfully provocative and wholly educational read.
