From 2 to 4,5* on reread. Clearly written by a genius author at her peak. The dinner scene was one of the more iconic pieces of prose I have ever read. Already ordered Mrs. Dalloway to read next!

Virginia Woolf: the author who made me rethink stream-of-consciousness and grow to love it. Her talents are on full display in To the Lighthouse, the simple story belying the many, many layers of meaning and symbolism underneath it. Her characters--those I like and those I don't--absolutely shine. Also, the way that the middle section, Time Passes, is structured and written is unbelievably beautiful and made me stop and think for a long time.

It is to me unbelievable how Virginia Woolf manages to represent her characters' psychology through the style of prose to the extent that she does in this novel. And to clarify, this is not a style that is particularly hard to parse, obtuse or wildly surreal. No - this is a novel that reads delightfully, tastes delectably (as one might like to inappropriately say about special things), well. If the novel ended up being just this, with few other redeeming qualities I probably still would have given it five stars. But again - not the case. Woolf not only manages to create a vivid gallery of characters and inserting them in that delicately balanced spot where they're to allowed to be just as realistic as they are functional, but also manages to make these characters' themes and arcs speak to something greater than the sum of their parts. I truly believe that this novel captures something special and grand and it has suddenly become my new favorite novel for doing so.

Undeniably well written with such wonderful use of language as we all expect from Woolf but did find it a bit of a drag to get through at times because of the stylistic choices. Not great when you feel brain dead!
