This book made me cry, this is one of the first books I finished and at the moment I was struggling with depression, the end page helped me so much, it made me feel not alone and whole.

If you’re someone that’s high sensitive please don’t read this book. The first few chapters were so much to process that it gave me an anxiety attack, also because of the letter format it was very difficult to connect with Charlie and feel emotion which made it extra hard when certain topics weren’t processed properly.
Also Charlie’s way of thinking made me feel like he may be on the spectrum? It constantly felt like people were taking advantage of his innocence and he didn’t understand how to say no.

From start to (my) finish, the environment he was in just made me feel very unsafe

I watched the movie a couple years ago and I distinctly remember not liking it because I didn't understand it. I'm so glad I decided to give the book a chance because I loved it so much. I think it was so good at capturing the feelings a teenager goes through at the time. although Charlie certainly seemed nicer and more empathetic than most teens. a true wallflower.
it was slightly triggering for me but I loved it regardless.

beautiful book that talks about the cycle of abuse and overcoming and dealing with trauma. coming of age story that talks about an aspect of mental health i dont think is often explored in most media. ive never related to a character as much as i do charlie and i think the 20th anniversary copy is definitely worth it because the added final letter from charlie as a now older man ( i think 35??) really gives the book that hopeful ending and its made me feel so much better. definitely check the trigger warnings before reading. its 100% a comfort read for me as someone who had gone through similar experiences

FOR THE TRIGGER WARNINGS:
I have them listed out but the ones talked about in more detail in the book are : Rape, Sexual Assault, Drug and Alcohol use, Homophobia, Mental illness,  Domestic/child abuse, Suicide
