Is it normal to cry at a sex scene? Because I ugly cried when Derek and Nick made their own bittersweet, intimate farewell to one another before she left for New York. This story is heartbreakingly and poignantly beautiful, full of strength, hope, tragedy and desire. I loved every moment of the story and couldn't put it down.
Derek and Nick make such a perfect couple, though they are both far from being perfect people. We get to see more of Mac, Jackson, Kat, Alec and Andrew - this book sets up what looks to be an explosive story for the latter two characters. The plot, world-building, pace and writing are amazing and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

It was a solid continuation. I was happy to see Michelle and I wish her situation could be resolved better. Maybe in a future book.

Seeing two "alpha" personalities have at each other was fun for a few minutes, but it got old fast. And most of this book wasn't even about Nicole and Derek? Her twin sister Michelle is arguably the central character of the book, and her pregnancy the prominent conflict that throws everyone's lives into turmoil. In terms of the world-building, it makes sense (once it's explained, at least) but it really draws so much of the story away from the romance.
Which is of the "finally it's happening" type. Apparently Derek and Nicole have had the hots for each other for a good long while--this was something they were both teased about in the first book--but now, for some reason, it's time to get down to business. Because the best time is during a crisis, right? It fueled the fast pace and the action, but left me unsatisfied about the couple.

I may have liked this one just a teeny bit less than Crux, but it was still an absorbing read. I think I just really like Jackson's Southern boy charm.
I love that Nicky and Derek made smart decisions in no-win situations, and that they kept their heads on shoulders even while falling head-over-heels in love. I am also really enjoying how future stories are beings set up without creating endless cliff hangers. I also still think I'd enjoy getting a drink at Nicky's bar.
I am trying hard to pace myself, but I just want to buy every book Moira Rogers has ever written, get a pitcher (or three) of frozen margaritas, and spend week on the beach reading my heart out.

Synopsis
Derek Gabriel and Nicole Peyton have been lusting after each other for a while but at the moment they finally decide to give in to their attraction, their world comes apart when Michelle's sister arrives on their doorstep on the run from the Wolf Conclave. Things go from bad to worse as wolf politics and traditions threaten to destroy Derek and Nick's new found love.
Note: It is necessary to read book #1 in the series first in order to understand some of the backstory.

The Southern Arcana world is intriguing. However, the background of the Wolf Conclave politics as well as the customs and traditions of their society are not sufficiently fleshed out which results in confusion and a vague dissatisfaction.
While Derek and Nick have a tangible chemistry and a sweet romance, their relationship also lacks background detail. This makes it difficult to become emotionally engaged in their characters and story - it is like coming into a movie in the middle. Nevertheless, Nick is a strong heroine and her devotion to her sister is admirable. Derek is one hot and sexy wolf and his willingness to sacrifice himself for love makes him even more appealing.
The plot lags in the beginning but heats up just past the halfway mark and becomes action packed toward the end. The secondary characters are very compelling, especially Alec and Kat, and I look forward to reading their books.

World building and political situation are very interesting. The build of the central relationship really happens before the book starts, so that takes a backseat to the plot.

I'm really enjoying this series. This one was a bit darker than the first but that was balanced by the appealing band of friends that make up this world and the main couple. It's a dangerous world that these shapeshifters, spellcasters and psychics inhabit and the politics of the shapeshifters that were featured in this book were particularly brutal. Derek and Nicole have an even rougher road to their HEA than Jackson and MacKenzie from book 1. But there's enough humor and camaraderie to balance out the darkness and make it a very good read.

I really should write reviews at once, now I waited three days and that is not good. But I hope I can do the book justice anyway.
In this book we get more of the politics and honestly those shifter bosses are such asses. But then men in power (and women) tend to be that. I liked Nicole, the heroine because she wanted out of that stuffy old world who only wanted her to choose a mate from one of their own sons. But she does have a weakness and that is love, her sister and just doing what she feels is right. Still who could not admire her.
The hero Derek, was turned shifter so to the bluebloods he is just a mutt. And he has liked Nick for a long long time. He is all a man should be, nice, protective of his loved ones, and hot. Together these two will create a little bit of magic of their own.
Even if I do like the big romance, there is so much more to like too. All the side characters are just love, like Kit and Andrew who sure flirt a lot with each other, and Alec, oh he sure won me over in this book and I really want to read his book. He is so alpha and mysterious. When he is near I forget everyone else, yes, awesome side character.
Back to the story. So much will happen. I wish I could tell you all, but that would sure spoil things. But prepare for surprises, heartache and victory.
The world is rich and with lots to explore. The bad guys are bad, but still normal. The passion is great, the friendships wonderful and it was a joy to read.
Conclusion:
I do think I liked this one more than book 1, or is that just because I am in some sort of I want Alec’s book haze? Lol, well book 1 was good and this one is even better then. I do hope the trend continue.
