An old Nazi and a teenage sociopath forge an unlikely friendship. Partnership? The story is gross in the way violent bigotry is gross. Still, it was compelling. At one point one of the characters got bitten by an animal and I caught myself hoping he would get rabies and die.

Reread for me - this was the first horror book I ever read as a teenager and it stuck with me for years, particularly a certain scene involving a cat. This is quite possibly one of the most disturbing and unsettling reads I’ve ever read, it left me feeling sick to my stomach nearly all the way through. I’m not much of a Stephen King fan, but this is so well written that I could not stop reading.

Whilst Apt Pupil is pretty short, it did drag a little for me. I was absorbed by the first 100 or so pages, and again by the last few pages, but it got a bit lost somewhere in-between.

I will give King credit where credit is due - this is extremely disturbing. King asks and answers the question: what’s scarier than a Nazi war criminal? His teenage neo-Nazi friend! (Friend? Mortal enemy? Hard to decide.)

I did really love the last sentence of this one. Supremely effed up :)

I literally never DNF books but I just can’t with this. The amount of animal abuse and antisemitism is just way too much for me. Mentally I cannot continue. I don’t care how it ends or if there is even a point.
