Название второго тома серии DC Rebirth о Супермене - Trial of the Super Sons, намекает на долгожданную встречу сыновей двух величайших супергероев вселенной DC.

Trial of the Super Sons might be named after the big confrontation between Superman's son and Batman's son, but the stories contained in this volume actually range a number of arcs; there's a one-off story about the Kent (Smith) family visit to a county fair, a two-part story on Dino Island, the aforementioned trial of the super sons, and a two-part story featuring DC's Frankenstein.

Although each story might contain enough punching to level a few buildings, the heart of the stories are really Superman's relationship to his family. In the county fair issue, Clark struggles to balance his life as Superman with his life as devoted father and husband. In the Dino Island arc, he worries about the impact of danger on his son. In the super son arc, Clark's style of parenting clashes violently with Bruce's style. In the Frankenstein arc, Lois and Clark meet with Frankenstein and his ex-wife, learning that their relationship couldn't withstand their son becoming a monster.

It is really these character moments that actually make this collection worth reading, and Tomasi and company really drive home the central character conceits that make Superman such a wonderful character. I'm very pleased that DC is finally willing to bring back the Superman of old, even though I still admit that the rest of the universe around Superman is increasingly less interesting after the events of the New 52. I would prefer greater arcs that don't involve as much punching or explosions, but that's ultimately just personal preference; the character work is still very good, and I find this a dramatic improvement over the New 52.

Re-read of an old favorite ❤️ This is volume is a mishmash of Superman stories. Most of which are written pretty well. The main story focuses on the Super sons, Jon Kent and Damian Wayne. The story begins with Damian trying to kidnap since he believes he will eventually turn evil due to his unstable powers. This leads the two boys to argue and they end up destroying the lab in the Batcave. Superman and Batman take this as an opportunity to get the to boys the start working together and they put the two boys through a series of trials to earn back their capes. I always like going back to read this story and see the Super sons first interactions. They’re one of the best duos to come out of DC. They have such a fun dynamic that I enjoy reading about.

My favorite side story/one shot was the first one Our Town where Clark tries to spend the entire day fighting the urge to don his cape and focusing on spending time with Lois and Jon at the fair only to stop the bad guys in the end. Seeing him fly back to ride the rollercoaster just as it’s about to take off was hilarious. He’s able to balance being a hero and a father. It was a fun read and I like reading about the more family oriented side of Superman. I also love this story for Jorge Jimenez’s artwork. He captures the Kent family so well in his style.

While I still stand behind the 1 star I have volume 1, I have to say this volume was pretty freaking adorable. I think I liked this volume much better because I knew what to expect. It has action but it's mainly family focused and filled with fluff, it's sweet and entertaining.

I get it now.

Dinosaur Island part 1&2 was really good and I can't wait to see where the storyline goes. It left me with so many questions!

Not gonna lie, I only wanted to read this volume to see Damian beat up Jon.

Not that I have anything against Jon because he's pretty freaking adorable but, Damian Wayne is my little demon baby and I love him!

The two issues in which Damian was featured was great! I enjoyed seeing Maya & Goliath again and Maya calls Damian little brother and I die. Watching these two super sons work together was adorable, sweet, and oh so funny!

The last two issues in this trade felt a little out of place. Frankenstein and his Bride hunting for a fugitive. It mainly focused on them, and their relationship. The ending for the last issue was rushed, one second their looking for the fugitive and the next she's apprehended with little explanation. but the main focus really wasn't on the fugitive it was the Frankensteins and damn the Bride was ice cold! By the end I wanted to punch her and hug Frankenstein.

One critique I have is there needs to be more dad jokes.

Received from publisher in exchange for an honest review

If you have been missing Superman, you know, the guy who was a hero and a genuinely nice guy -- here's the book for you! He's back! Thanks to the magic of complicated comic continuity (which you don't even need to really keep up with) Superman is now a loving husband and father. It is so great.

I'm ready to read more please.
