I didn't realize this is YA, so at first I was a bit confused as to whether kids would resonate with the story. Well told.

Favorite book of all time so far. I wasn’t expecting to love this as much as I did. I found this book just browsing through books online and the cover pulled me in, which is weird in and of itself because I hate butterfly’s like so bad, they just creep me out. So I don’t know why I was drawn in but once I was and read the blurb I was sold. I’m so glad I decided to pick it up and then actually pick it up. I tend to buy a book but not read it right away and idk something about this one just called to me and I picked it up pretty quickly after buying it. I read it in a couple days not because I was bored and couldn’t have finished it in one sitting because I so could have I was just busy but I’m glad I didn’t binge it completely because it really built up my emotions and feelings for the main character and her journey. I just love the main character. To death. Literally. I wish I could be friends with her. I feel like I understand her motives for her brother and also I get his reaction too. This whole story was just so beautifully crafted and with poetic writing but not over the top for a novel. Also the inclusions about language were just so intriguing of an aspect.

Engaging story that also will teach readers a bit about the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Sometimes was difficult to read the phonetic spellings of H's speech, but was always repeated afterwards, so you could go with the flow. LeeRoy's story could have been fleshed out more - I never really understood why he wanted to be a cowboy - but all in all a good book.

This was a wonderful read. There were many sad parts but there was also cute/funny parts along with hopefulness. I loved all the characters and how they all grew/interacted with each other. The ending left me with a feeling of hope for the characters especially with Hng and her brother and Hng with Leroy.
