Loved this book! I actually loved the academic style of writing (as this seems to be mixed feelings in other reviews), for it makes the content of the book more "believable" and we enter in Emily's world more easily. The relationship between Emily and Wendell is very cute and honest, and the way the writer highlights strong traits of their personalities for good or bad can make you shift perspective when you come back to real life, with a little more detachment and humour.

Super cute, the main character and the little town where she’s looking for ‘the folk’ are delightful, but the stakes got super high.

Let me start by saying that I understand the mixed reviews on this book. It doesn’t move quickly, it is written largely in the style of an academic journal and the female main character is perhaps not instantly likeable. However, I loved it!
I found the accounts of the “Folk” to be full of charm, humour and so.much.whimsy! The contrasting characters of Wendell and Emily offered lots of low-key but lovely comedic moments, and the supporting characters and the setting felt vivid and interesting.
It wasn’t perfect, and I skipped a few times when Emily’s detailed academic accounts of things carried on too much, but overall it was a cosy and magical low-stakes adventure.
