The hype was real, and it was beautiful! I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Emily, Wendell, and the rest of the quirky, wonderful characters that populate this book. The incorporation of faerie legend and worldbuilding was so gorgeously and naturally done, and I could not get over how much I loved that part of the story. Truly a beautiful reading experience, and I can't wait to get my hands on book two!!!

I wanted to love the book but the scene of torturing a changeling child really disturbed me. So much of the language used is similar to language that used to be used about disabled children and it’s clearly a metaphor for disabled children but the actions towards the child are disgusting and disturbing. The fact that the protagonist is never called out or faces repercussions for her actions was so upsetting to me. Ruined what would have been a lovely story.

This book was equally charming and creepy in a Brothers Grimm sort of way. Emily is an independent explorer/researcher looking to uncover the mysteries or the Fairies. But on her adventure in the cold of a small town in the middle of nowhere where she uncovers more than she planned. This was part Brothers Grimm part Pride and Prejudice to me. I love the banter but wish there had been more romance. Hoping the second book develops that relationship a bit more. But it was a great read and a bit of a historic one as well. Perfect winter book.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the beginning, our main character Emily came across as neurodivergent-coded to me so I enjoyed reading her perspective and social struggles. The love interest grew on me, but I'm not convinced about him being a good fit for Emily romantically.

The ending was a let down and by the last few chapters I was bored and just wanted the book to be over, I think the journal format didn't help with that.
