I find myself  very surprised for liking this book as much as I did. Usually, fairy stories are too violent for my liking, but this one, though it did have violence in it, was more charming than anything, and that had everything to do with our maybe neurodivergent lead protagonist. She was adorable, full of heart and courage, smart, outspoken, determined, and ethical. Also loved her dog Shadow.

I feel like it had all the elements I love so I’m not sure what didn’t click! I was stoked to see neurodivergence and the romance for them. Maybe not enough romance for me, maybe too much information on fairies? I’m not sure but I wasn’t swept away by it. Often I was just reading and not really retaining all the stories being told. Perhaps it was the narration? Either way, I’m going to pass on continuing with the series.

This is such a uniquely written book. It’s smart and interesting like reading an uncovered diary you’re not supposed to see.

There were some parts in the first third I found a little boring but overall it was a smooth and fascinating read. Tons of vocabulary I was unfamiliar with though.

If you were one of those kids with the Fairyology or Dragonology books, this is for you.
