Rounded up to 3 stars... the modern dialog between characters seemed out of place

i love me anything viking-era, anything old norse. i thoroughly enjoyed this book through and through. knocked a star off because for a few chapters the book’s plot got derailed for random sub-plot romances that, while they are integral to the success of the main characters, i felt took too long and made us miss the main plot for a bit. i just wish it was made more obvious that halldor was trans because i didn’t know it until i read the appendix after the story was finished. i would have loved it more.

couldn’t put it down. as someone who loved the witch’s heart i immediately purchased this when i saw the author wrote another book but i let it sit on my shelf for way too long!!! one the best detail in this book arguably is Eirik’s love for his cats. i know this book is an extreme modernization of mythology but i deeply enjoyed this book!

Without giving away spoilers, I really enjoyed reading about characters that are not often found in historical novels. Unfortunately, I just didn’t enjoy the writing style and I thought the main character was very irritating.

Overall a fun read. I agree with reviewers discussing the language used by the characters as slightly cringey/middle school-ish. But I viewed this as a nice palate cleanser after recent books I’d been reading. I’d consider this borderline YA.

somewhere between three and four stars. hard for me to decide how i feel.

love, love, love gornichec with all my heart. her writing, world-building, and characters are all phenomenal. i love reading her work and seeing the way that the characters and their relationships evolve through the novel. really enjoyed the setting and the overall feeling of the book.

plot dragged at times and i couldn’t get myself hooked at a lot of parts. felt like i was just pushing through most of the book.

Thank you so much to Titan and NetGalley for an e-arc of this book.

I loved the Witch’s Heart and have this on pre-order so was super excited to get an arc.

This book did not disappoint, indeed I want more! I would love a sequel about Gunnhild’s life as queen.

I loved the characters portrayed in this book, the sisterhood and friendship between women was fantastic. The interpretation of the sagas was really well done.

I would have loved more exploration into the magic and Gunnhild’s training.

Cant wait to see what the author writes next!
