Osamu Dazai writes the role of the self-loathing yet hypocritical man, (who believes himself to be an exception from the rules simply because he believes himself to not be human and to be above the understanding of humans) incredibly well but you will never like Yozo. I believe that is the point of the book: to pity the ones who were involved in the life of our main character.
Edit: I just found out this was a suicide note written by Dazai that he wrote in the form of a book... uh.. at least he had a creative outlet???

However, I could relate to the main character. Not everything, but a lot of things he said made sense to me.
I would recommend this book, but take your time to read it.

So this was an extremely depressing and dark read about the very lonely and again very depressing life of Yozo. From a young age, he was a people pleaser because he was scared of humans, to the point that he despised them. He grew out to be incredibly self centered and thus was disconnected from everyone around him. I felt that his feelings towards humans and the misogyny in his mind was an extension of his depressive thoughts and drink addiction: being a self pitying person, who revels only in his own perceived suffering, while treating and thinking of everyone in his life terribly.

It was unique.
The writing was a bit challenging some times but I still had to keep reading. I think it was worth reading.

What I did have a problem with was the narrator's view on women and his extreme misogyny whenever attempting to explain the "nature of women". Of course this is a product of the early 20th century where this might be appropriate, but it still makes me want to throw up and I have no desire reading this kind of content (even if such a book might be considered a classic).
Apart from that I probably feel quite neutral about this book.
