I've been trying to expand my understanding of the experiences of others through my reading. Many of the books I've read on racisms or the Black experience have been US-centric, and none have been completely focused on the experiences of mixed race people. That this book had that focus, and was also by British authors, helps to fill some of the gaps in my knowledge.

This is a very accessible book which covers many facets of being a mixed race person in a society that defaults to racialising people...and doesn't always know how to do so with people of diverse racial backgrounds. The othering, the fetishising, the excluding and the prejudice that is part of moving through the world for people of a mixed race background is different to those seen as Black, even at a group level. And this book strives to display that on an individual level that experience can be felt in even more varied ways, by using interviews with other mixed race people. It gives a space for people who are mixed race to be seen and relate to others.

This book also looks outwards, applying a critical eye to the inherent racism of society, even in parents or family members of mixed race people, with a view to promoting an honest assessment and modifying how people are viewed or behaved towards. I found that very helpful in thinking about my own way of seeing people and thinking about how the mixed race experience is similar but also different from the wider issue of racism.

This is a really interesting book and I appreciated the chance to read it.

I received a Netgalley of this title from Random House UK in return for a review. All opinions are my own.

I will say, it took me ages to read this. I had to put it down a few times with how heavy some of the topics were. That being said, I felt seen in this book. I've only had my sister to talk to about our experiences, so it was nice to see that our experience isn't individual. I loved how the topics in this were approached. Not only does it help those who are mixed but also those who are family or friends of them. I will definitely be recommending this book to all my family and friends!

As someone who struggled a lot with their identity and having a mixed heritage growing up, this book feels like a warm hug! I hope people read this and reflect, especially parents of mixed race children.

I wish it would have gone a bit deeper for certain parts of the book, sometimes it felt like expirations were quite brief and surface level. But I understand that it’s difficult exploring all the aspects of mixed race experiences in one book. It’s still a great start and I strongly recommend it.
