I read this before reading the throne of glass series and really enjoyed it. Such a heart breaking ending!
My main grievance is that it kept repeating key plot points every time someone was mentioned. It just felt repetitive.

I love how the character’s age and corresponding naivety/poor thinking was a weakness - though it doesn’t quite fit with her being the world’s deadliest assassin! But I guess they just do and don’t have to question what they’re sent for!

I also felt the main love interest was a bit flat - his whole personality was that and it came out of nowhere after all the jealousy. It also seemed like every male she interacted with was a potential love interest. It felt a bit much.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series holds up.

Highly recommend you read this one earlier than I did - some time around Book 2-4 would be best! But it’s good backstory, and it was interesting learning about characters I already knew.

I read this as the third book in the series, as the author recommends.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy the prologue novellas as much as I did, but it built a compelling portrait of Celaena's character that also filled in some of her less understandable traits in the first two books. The romance plot in this book is far more compelling and believable than those in the other two books, and I hope this is a sign that the romance arcs will continue to mature as the series progresses.

a great introduction to the worldbuilding and to Celaena's character, her story, and her motivations. Got quite tragic at the end, and sometimes it was dragging a bit, but it is a prequel and not part of the main series so im cutting it some slack, would be four stars, but the emotional damage was enough to take it down a notch. RIP Sam. Sarah J Maas you will pay.
