Jess Kidd is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. She writes with such a pin-sharp eye for detail that enhances the incredible atmosphere of her novels without bogging them down in description. Her imagination is completely unparalleled and often, quite frankly, terrifying.

While horror is never my favourite genre, Jess Kidd has a way of weaving in deliciously macabre, downright chilling visualizations within her historical fiction plots, that leave me invested, on the edge of my seat, and desperate to know more. Full of longing and layered mysteries Mr. Flood’s Last Resort brought the whole haunted house with its cantankerous/creepy/sinister octogenarian resident story trope to whole new levels with this heartfelt drama. While I am admittedly in love with her writing I did find myself a little lost within the layers of this particular novel and wish some reveals were more forthcoming before everything is woven together at the end. But if you’re looking for something wholly unique and enjoy a good eerie ghost story, that will also make you laugh out loud, you have to check out Jess Kidd.

A very clever, extremely well-written book. Only marked down as it was a bit too obvious for me. Definitely one for the beach, airplane or long dog walks (if audible subscriber)

I recently watched a TV show called ‘Celebrity Dinner Date’, where an Irish reality star was looking for romance. One prospective suitor told her that he fancied the Irish lifestyle ‘ wandering down to the pub to listen to the fiddlers’, to which she replied, ‘Not all pubs in Ireland have fiddlers!’.

The Hoarder is set, I think, in London, but its two major characters are as Irish as pub fiddlers. I found the original set up, of the hoarder’s house, intriguing. However the painful slowness of the plot and the self-conscious whimsy of the writing, caused me to abandon it at around 30%.

This was a good book, but unfortunately not a great book because the foreshadowing was too heavy-handed, so nothing came as a surprise in the end. I kept hoping that the things I thought I had figured out would turn out not to be what I expected. Sadly that didn't happen. Had the author held back a bit and let some of the twists remain twisty, it could have been an excellent mystery.
