June’s pick for Read Christie 2023, for the method of gunshot.

We get Jane Marple’s full self-deprecating analysis as she visits a girlhood friend at Stonygates, a rehabilitation centre for wayward youths. But despite the setting, the youthful criminals are very remote to the story so the mystery feels more like a typical country house setting.

A complicated family tree leaves lots of suspects, and Marple observes all the relationships and personalities. The title refers to misdirection in conjuring tricks, which she sees through (of course).

This is a fun read, if not particularly suspenseful, nor logical really. I did enjoy that Miss Marple was front and centre throughout the story.

“Me?” exclaimed Miss Marple. “Why me?”
“Because you’ve got a nose for that sort of thing. You always had. You’ve always been a sweet innocent-looking creature, Jane, and all the time underneath nothing has ever surprised you, you always believe the worst.”
“The worst is so often true,” murmured Miss Marple.

The main point is misdirection.
