Christa is everything Blanche wishes she could be. Christa is ambitious, beautiful, worldly and she has a boyfriend who looks like David Bowie. After admiring her from afar, Blanche never would dream that Christa would want to become her friend. Suddenly, Christa has found her way into every aspect of Blanche’s life. It is only then that Blanche is able to see Christa for who she is… Antichrista.
“Antichrista” is a play on words for “antichrist.” Throughout the book, there is a lot of Christian imagery that interplays between the friendship/rivalry/bullying that goes on between Blanche and Christa. Blanche herself lives up to her name. Blanche comes from the word “blanc” in French that means white but can also mean blank. Unlike Christa, Blanche is a bookish, shy, intellectual girl who is always under the radar. To everyone else, Blanche does not have much of a personality and is far inferior to Christa. Even Blanche’s parents end up loving Christa more than their own daughter.
I identified strongly with Blanche to the point where it made me uncomfortable to read the story. However, Blanche changes greatly during the events of the book, and I ended up finding her despicable as a protagonist. Antichrista made me so mad that once I finished my university course, I didn’t want the book on my shelves anymore. I know that by now you might be wondering… isn’t Amélie Nothomb one of your favourite authors? Yes, she is. Antichrista wasn’t a story for me, but I liked the way Nothomb writes. She is incredibly clever and loves to add imagery and philosophy to her works. The second book I read by Nothomb was Journal d’Hirondelle, which I ended up really enjoying.
If you want to try out reading an Amélie Nothomb novel for the first time, I would not suggest starting with Antichrista.
