For some reason, I didn't like this one as much as the others. I really enjoyed Tik-Tok's character, but all the rest fell short of the original characters that I enjoyed so much.

A little disappointing considering very few of our already-beloved characters played a role, and even Tik-Tok had such a small part! Alas, I don't think I could truly hate any book about Oz.

- I'm really surprised this book exists. The back story is really interesting. Baum wrote a play about Ozma of Oz, but because he couldn't use the original characters for some reason, he came up with some new ones. Then Baum decided to turn the play into a book. So the book is a lot like Ozma of Oz. It has a lot of the same scenarios with different characters.
- I liked the dragon a lot. I love that there are dragons in Oz. The dragon reminded me of that flying dog from The Neverending Story.
- This was one of my least favorite in the series. I wasn't into the new characters, and it repeated a previous book.

Baum has redeemed himself in my eyes with this, the eighth book in the series of Oz books. Despite the title, the book is primarily about the quest of the Shaggy Man to rescue his brother from the arch villain of Oz, the Gnome King. Despite having his entire memory erased in the previous book, he is still as evil and nasty as ever.
One of the things that had started to turn me off on the Oz books was how the end of the story seemed to come out of nowhere and tie up all the lose ends in a couple of pages. And while this book does some of this it stretches the resolution at the end out over a couple of chapters which made for a much more enjoyable read.
This book is also the first to approach the same sort of wonderful oddness that Lewis Caroll invoked in Alice in Wonderland. The previous books including the first seemed to be pale imitations.
Thus far this is my second favorite of the Oz books, with Ozma of Oz.

You think that we would have gotten the point of Oz already, but no, there has to be about a million books with the same plot to drive the point home

Not bad but not all that good either. The writing is better than the earlier books but it is definitely not up to the quality of the last few. Which is probably not surprising since this is apparently a retread of an earlier book. This one definitely follows a formula, perhaps the next will be better again.

I liked this one, but of all the characters that appeared in this book, Tik-Tok might have been in it the least. It's completely unclear why this book was named after him. I really thought this was going to be his origin story, which I was super pumped about! While I was mildly disappointed about that, this book ended up being sort of what The Road to Oz should have been, and after that let down, I was pleased to finally see an actual battle of some sort!
