I came into Geek Love completely blind and came out wishing that I was. Perhaps that's an overstatement, but this book has forced me to sit and ponder our society's emphasis on uniqueness and what some people will do to achieve it. This novel is astounding -- I will be forever amazed at how Katherine Dunn managed to continuously surprise me through every chapter, taking the worst possible scenarios and making them even darker. I had to pause constantly to absorb what I was reading, sifting through Dunn's incredible prose that transported me to the dusty midway of Binewski's Carnival Fabulon. Although I was disappointed with the lack of climax at the end, despite the teasing of the second plotline throughout the novel, I can confidently say Geek Love will forever hold a special place in my heart, mostly because these scenes and characters will never be forgotten no matter how much I try.

This is the worst and stupidest book ever written. Do not waste your time. I am baffled at all the high praise it has received. The plot is lackluster, the characters are neither lovable nor sympathetic. As I read, I felt like the author was just trying SO HARD to come up with the most outrageous and absurd characters and plot lines they could, and it did not work for them. Truly a horror and a waste of time unless you like incest and bad writing.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I really like the writing style and I think overall the author takes you on a wild ride, although it is quite slow-paced around the middle and I think could have been a bit shorter and had the same effect.

I need to ruminate further on the message and the point of the book. Largely it is about people with physical disabilities experiencing pride in themselves and rather than conforming to normality, taking advantage of their uniqueness. Given that the author is not disabled from what I can tell, and neither am I, I would be interested to read reviews from some disabled people as to their views on this.
