I highly recommend this book to me this is one of the best books I have ever read , how it was written was amazing the plot shocking but also steady. It was funny yet so mature. The romantic relationship was slow but made you anticipate it more with each book. I wish I could read it for the first time again.

The entire book is a set-up for a ā€œbig revealā€ you know about all alongā€¦. Because itā€™s listed on the back cover. Some YA books can hold an adult audienceā€¦ Iā€™m not sure this is one of them. What differentiates it from other Oz retellings is the sheer amount of gore and horror. Donā€™t read if you canā€™t stomach graphic violence. The forced ā€œenemies to loversā€ romance trope is slapdash and unnecessary, and the constant repetition of ā€œdonā€™t trust anyoneā€ is tiresome and makes it difficult to commit to any of the characters. Iā€™ll read the next book, solely because it seems to center the heroā€™s journey this book only unfairly teases.Ā

I think if I readĀ Dorothy Must DieĀ in middle school, I wouldā€™ve enjoyed it more than I did as an adult. The concept of Dorothy Gale being a tyrannical dictator is rather interesting, but I didnā€™t care for the world-building and ā€œnewā€ systems in Oz. Nevertheless, the plot was gripping enough and during the middle and end I was invested in the action.Ā

I might continue on with the series, but I havenā€™t officially decided yet.

If you love twisted fairytales this oneā€™s for you. I enjoyed the idea of this book even if the writing was basic. I understood who Amyā€™s character was supposed to be, and enjoyed the fact that she didnā€™t immediately gain an obsessive love interest.Ā

Dorothy Must Die is a uniquely dark take on The Wizard of Oz. Ā

I wasn't sure about this book at first, but it definitely picked up along the way. I loved the twist on a famous story. It's definitely a dark retelling with a fair share of gore and mild torture, so beware. I'm so intrigued by where this series is headed and will for sure be moving on to the next installment soon. I do want to note that there is a bit of cussing and gore, so I don't plan on recommending this to just any YA reader.
