I thought this book was really fantastic. Such a Fun Age was compulsively readable, twisty and had me gasping in multiple places. It's jumping off point is an altercation that occurs when Emira, a Black babysitter employed by a wealthy, white blogger, is accused of kidnapping the child she's looking after. The book continues in dual perspective as Emira's employer, Alix, desperately tries to connect with Emira and prove just how racist she isn't. Reid pointedly and cleverly displays the various microaggressions Emira has to face in her job whilst Alix continually pats herself on the back. Emira is surrounded by so many "well meaning" individuals, whose actions throughout the book were so performative it was painful. The majority of the time Emira's employer and her boyfriend took action without bothering to wonder how this would affect Emira, the black woman they were supposedly "protecting".

Emira was wonderful, and I thought she was intensely relatable in her aimlessness as a twenty-something who doesn't really know where to go outside of her current part-time job. It was nice to read from the point of view of a millennial who didn't quite have it all together. Briar was another favourite of mine. Her sweet little interruptions to the narrative and nonsensical comments tugged at my heart strings, and I actually teared up reading her interactions with Emira. Their bond was really sweet and their dynamic quickly became my favourite.

I honestly think this book is so clever and so well done. I'd love to see it adapted.

Emira embodies all I want to be in life and is completely relatable in trying to figure out life in your mid to late 20s. Alix, on the other hand, is an annoyance I cannot stand and my life would be better off without her.

This book is so well written. I was amazed at how the dialogue and thoughts evoked so many memories and feelings related to privilege and positionally that I’ve never quite put into words, even in my own head. Not much “happened,” but I was riveted by the story. Funny and disturbing at the same time.
