A wonderfully written book that is another great example of David Levithan's incredible ability to masterfully weave together storylines in a way that never fails to leave me awestruck. It is also, unfortunately, incredibly necessary, showing how a book that simply includes love that isn't heteronormative, even if it isn't anywhere close to the focus, can cause uproar amongst parents if that book is assigned in a classroom. The students themselves aren't the ones who hold the hate. However, it is also a beautiful story about how conversations between children and their parents can be a place for connection and growth for both sides, and how initial impressions and reactions don't always mean they lack space for growth. A poignant book for young people and parents alike, Levithan has created yet another masterpiece.

This touching middle grade book is three stories in one. Donovan, a fifth grader, is assigned the novel, “The Adventurers.” When Donovan brings the book home his mother takes interest in it and after reading only the ending she takes on a personal crusade to get the book pulled from the school’s curriculum. Rick and Oliver are the main characters of “The Adventurers,” two boys enjoying adventures. And finally, Gideon and Roberto become fast friends after Roberto moves into town in the fifth grade. All three stories involve bonding and love. The students of Mr Howe’s class love what they have read so far of “The Adventurers,” but they are forced to stop because of the challenge being brought to the board of Ed. These stories are hopeful, seeing students supporting each other and excepting each other no matter who they are or who they choose to love. The author gives a beautiful tribute to authors who came before him, a kind of inspiration for a future where there can be acceptance without question.
