I was not too fond of the pacing in this volume.
I prefer how the anime does it, having all the scenes with them in the cadet corp before the Battle of Trost and not after, as it feels a lot more confusing as he cuts to them after the battle. Then, to them just starting their training years prior and then cutting to after the Battle of Trost and the cleanup. It's all just somewhat confusing.

Volume 4 of this series resolves the cliffhanger from the third volume as humanity gains its first, very costly, victory over the Titans. From there, the story flashes back to Eren in training.
A lot of new characters are introduced here, and there is the potential for lots of really fun interactions as the story moves forward. There were also some good insights into the training process and the dynamic between the recruits. Most of the best recruits want military police duty, which means the fighters most capable of bringing down titans are the least likely to face them.
Armin is a major part of the opening scene, but he and Mikasa fade into the background a bit as the new characters get the spotlight. There were places where it was a little bit hard to keep straight who everyone was, but the new characters had enough interesting details and quirks that this should become easier as the story progresses.

Only giving written reviews for pivotal pieces of the manga.
Volume 4 is an unskippable part of AoT. AoT is a lot like Game of Thrones in that it's constantly recycling it's cast by killing some off every couple of volumes. But what AoT does that GoT doesn't is that it makes you really care for the characters it routinely kills off. Volume four touches on the backstory of the main trainees and makes you fall in love with them. Sasha, Annie and Ymir in particular all have very iconic phrases and scenes that are recalled in later volumes, it's no wonder the three later became fan favorites.
Great manga volume....onwards to the Survey Corps!
